Kids Exposed to “Forever Chemicals” May Grow Up With Weaker Bones

0

Common “forever chemicals” could quietly undermine kids’ bone strength before they even reach adulthood. New research published today (March 17) in the Journal of the Endocrine Society suggests that exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) early in life could play a role in how children’s bones form during adolescence. PFAS are man-made chemicals commonly […]

Shares of Samsung Electronics rose as much as ‌5% on Tuesday after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the South Korean company was producing Nvidia’s new artificial intelligence chips.

The news fuelled expectations that Samsung’s foundry division, which makes logic ‌chips for customers including Tesla, Apple and Samsung’s phone division, may be able ‌to turn around as early as next ‌year after posting billions of dollars in annual losses in recent years, analysts said.

At Nvidia’s GTC developer conference in California on Monday, Huang unveiled Nvidia’s new AI inference processor ‌based on technology from chip startup Groq.

“I want to thank Samsung who manufactures the Groq LP30 chip for us and they’re cranking as ‌hard as they can,” he said, adding the chips were in production, and would be shipped in the second half of this year.

Samsung also showcased the Nvidia chips made using its 4-nanometer manufacturing process at ‌the GTC. Samsung shares were up 4.3% at 196,800 won as of 0252 GMT, after earlier reaching 198,000 won. The broader market was up 2.7%.

Sohn In-joon, an analyst at Heungkuk Securities, expected Samsung’s foundry business would be ‌able to reach breakeven later next year. But he said weak demand from mobile phones stemming from surging memory chip prices could weigh on foundry earnings.

Advanced Micro Devices’ CEO Lisa Su will meet Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee in South Korea on Wednesday, media ‌reports said, with eyes on whether the two would discuss cooperation in memory chips and logic semiconductors.

Tennessee minors sue Musk’s xAI, alleging Grok generated sexual images of them

Three Tennessee plaintiffs, including two minors, sued Elon Musk’s xAI on Monday, alleging that it knowingly designed its Grok image generator ‌to let people create sexually explicit content by using real photos of others.

The lawsuit, filed in the San Jose, California federal court, is seeking class-action status for people in the United States who were “reasonably ‌identifiable” in sexualised images or videos generated by Grok based on real images ‌of themselves.

The artificial intelligence company did not ‌immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

After an outcry over sexually explicit content generated by the chatbot, xAI said in January that it had blocked all users from editing images of “real ‌people in revealing clothing” and from generating images of people in revealing clothing in “jurisdictions where it’s illegal.”

Governments and regulators around the world ‌have also since launched probes, imposed bans and demanded safeguards in a growing push to curb illegal and offensive material.

The lawsuit claims xAI failed to install safeguards to prevent its systems from generating sexual content involving minors. All ‌three plaintiffs were minors at the time the images were generated.

Plaintiffs allege their real images were digitally altered into explicit content and then shared online through platforms, causing emotional distress and creating a public nuisance.

They are seeking unspecified ‌damages, legal fees, and an injunction requiring xAI to halt the alleged practices.

“These are children whose school photographs and family pictures were turned into child sexual abuse material,” plaintiffs’ counsel Annika Martin of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein said in a statement. “Elon Musk and xAI deliberately designed Grok to ‌produce sexually explicit content for financial gain, with no regard for the children and adults who would be harmed.”

Apple on Monday unveiled the second generation of its premium AirPods Max over-ear headphones at $549, ‌more than five years after the first version’s launch.

The update marks Apple’s first major refresh of the over-ear headphones since their 2020 debut, ‌as the company adds new features and improved noise ‌cancellation to compete more aggressively ‌in the premium headphones market.

Currently, the segment is largely dominated by Japan’s Sony Group, Bose and Sennheiser. Powered by Apple’s in-house H2 ‌chip, which runs the latest range of AirPods devices, the new headphones will be available to order ‌from March 25 in more than 30 countries, with retail availability beginning early next month, the company said.

Upgrades to the AirPods Max 2 include better ‌active noise cancellation, an improved microphone system and a range of new features including Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Live Translation.

Live translation, first introduced on the ‌AirPods Pro 3 in September, enables users to translate in-person conversations across languages using Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence platform.

AirPods Max 2 also supports high-resolution lossless audio when connected via USB-C, targeting music ‌creators and professional users who require higher fidelity audio, Apple said.

European publishers, tech firms urge EU to speed up fine on Google over search

The investigation, ‌launched by the European Commission on March 25, 2024 under the European Union Digital Markets Act (DMA), has been going on for nearly two years [File]

European publishers, tech firms and startups have urged EU antitrust regulators to wrap up a near two-year probe into Alphabet unit Google’s alleged favouring of its own services in online searches and impose a fine on the tech giant.

In a letter to EU leaders, ‌the European Publishers Council, whose members include Axel Springer, News Corp and Conde Nast, the European Magazine Media Association, the European Tech ‌Alliance, EU Travel Tech and others called for the investigation ‌to be finished next week.

The push underscores tensions within the bloc over the complex balance of regulating Big Tech, with regular clashes between Washington and Brussels over rules curbing the dominance of U.S. companies in social media, online search and AI.

The investigation, ‌launched by the European Commission on March 25, 2024 under the European Union Digital Markets Act (DMA), has been going on for nearly two years.

EU regulators have said they aim to wrap up ‌DMA cases within 12 months. The Commission announced charges last year.

“The European Commission’s credibility is on the line,” the groups representing publishers, tech companies and startups said in a joint letter sent on Sunday to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera and EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen.

“It is important that ‌sustained pressure to dilute the DMA is not shown to have succeeded,” it said.

“Every passing day further erodes the profitability of European companies, hampering their ability to invest and grow, with many already facing financial distress or even bankruptcy under the weight of Alphabet’s conduct.”

The European Commission confirmed receipt of the letter.

“The Commission aims to conclude this complex ‌investigation as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson said.

Google, which has made various proposals to mollify rivals and EU regulators since it was charged, did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Its rivals say that the measures are insufficient. The company denies favouring its own services in online search.

The groups, which include the Initiative for Neutral Search, Innovative Europe Foundation and the German ‌Startup Association, urged the Commission, which acts as the EU competition watchdog, to adopt a formal non-compliance decision against Alphabet, including a cease-and-desist order, and impose a deterrent fine.
